US Court Rules Samsung Copied from Apple; Samsung Not Pleased

The jury in a San Jose, California court has ruled that Samsung stole designs from Apple in developing its smartphones and computer tablets. As a result, the court has ordered the South Korean conglomerate to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Predictably, Samsung was not pleased with the decision and plans to file for an appeal, even accusing the Cupertino-based company of using US patent laws in its attempt to dominate the smartphone market.
In a statement, Samsung said that it was “unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners”.

According to the (usually very reliable) SammyHub, Samsung is preparing to bring the LTE version of its flagship smartphone to markets outside Korea and US. The next stop of the Samsung Galaxy S III LTE tour will reportedly be Germany, where the device is said to come in October. The European LTE-enabled Galaxy S III unit will take after their Korean cousins, keeping the Exynos 4 chipsets.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has been speaking to GamesIndustry International about Ubi's reasons for embracing the free to play model. He says free to play games are more cost effective to create because typical PC releases are so heavily pirated. He claims that "only about five to seven per cent" of players pay for PC games, "the rest is pirated.". Guillemot doesn't provide any evidence for this, but insists that the rate of paying customers for a traditional release is equal to that of a free to play game.

Rumors regarding a Verizon-bound LG Optimus Vu have been around for quite a while now. We've even seen an Optimus Vu with Verizon's brand in some photos, and LG itself confirmed that an LTE version of the smartphone would be released in the US this quarter. Now we have more news on the matter. It looks like the Optimus Vu will come under a different name to Verizon.

Could this 5-inch LG handset be Verizon's answer to the Galaxy Note. Our Intuition tells us otherwise (get it?), but that screenshot above and corresponding FCC docs deign to differ. Really though, that lady razor name's the purported new moniker for Big Red's rebranded Optimus Vu: the heretofore Korea-only phablet we recently reviewed. While we found the outsized handset's worth as a true S-Pen rival hampered by its lack of a digitizer and 4:3 aspect ratio, it could catch on with folks eager for a 7-inch tablet alternative.

PayPal already has a partnership with MasterCard in place that lets you use its debit cards in stores, but the company has now expanded that retail presence even further with a new deal it's struck with Discover. Starting sometime next year, that arrangement will let PayPal customers use their charge cards at any of the 7 million retail locations that accept Discover cards, with funds drawn directly from their PayPal account. What's more, PayPal says that retailers won't have to make any hardware or software upgrades to accept the PayPal payments, noting that they'll simply have to let customers know of the new option with in-store signage.
