US Court Rules Samsung Copied from Apple; Samsung Not Pleased

The jury in a San Jose, California court has ruled that Samsung stole designs from Apple in developing its smartphones and computer tablets. As a result, the court has ordered the South Korean conglomerate to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Predictably, Samsung was not pleased with the decision and plans to file for an appeal, even accusing the Cupertino-based company of using US patent laws in its attempt to dominate the smartphone market.
In a statement, Samsung said that it was “unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners”.

RIM: No buyers in sight

RIM: No buyers in sight

. Research In Motion (RIMM) has repeatedly stated that it will explore all opportunities as it looks to reverse its current slump. CEO Thorsten Heins regularly points to licensing the upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform as an option, though no potential licensees have emerged at this point. RIM has already begun to identify non-essential businesses it might sell in an effort to raise cash, but larger divisions could end up on the block and RIM may even explore an outright sale.

Apple's triumph over Samsung is intoxicating

Apple's triumph over Samsung is intoxicating

. Apple‘s triumph over Samsung seems at a first glance intoxicating. Screen bounce-back, pinch and zoom - all in all, seven of Apple's key claims against Samsung were validated across a broad range of phones. It is cold comfort indeed that Samsung's weakly selling tablet escaped the worst censure.

Here are Samsung Galaxy S III, LG Optimus Elite and HTC One X. Quickly – which is which?

That is a question another set of jurors may start pondering sooner rather than later. Samsung is the big fish, already towering over Apple when it comes to quarterly smartphone shipment volumes.

Ubisoft CEO: PC gaming has 'around a 93-95% piracy rate'

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has been speaking to GamesIndustry International about Ubi's reasons for embracing the free to play model. He says free to play games are more cost effective to create because typical PC releases are so heavily pirated. He claims that "only about five to seven per cent" of players pay for PC games, "the rest is pirated.". Guillemot doesn't provide any evidence for this, but insists that the rate of paying customers for a traditional release is equal to that of a free to play game.

Facebook 5.0 for iOS hands-on

Facebook 5.0 for iOS hands-on

Facebook is one of the most downloaded apps in the world, but yet, it got fairly average app-store reviews for something that is so universally used. There are basically two main points of friction for mobile Facebook users: speed and battery usage. Facebook 5.0 is an attempt to fix the speed problem, and we can hope that some of the battery issues got better as well. To be fair, Facebook is a web service that consumes quite a bit of data. Things are personalized, so it's not always easy to cache and there are a lot of data points to fetch, so it's easy to introduce a ton of network requests, each of which is slow.

LG Optimus Vu to bow on Verizon as the Intuition, stylus not included?

Could this 5-inch LG handset be Verizon's answer to the Galaxy Note. Our Intuition tells us otherwise (get it?), but that screenshot above and corresponding FCC docs deign to differ. Really though, that lady razor name's the purported new moniker for Big Red's rebranded Optimus Vu: the heretofore Korea-only phablet we recently reviewed. While we found the outsized handset's worth as a true S-Pen rival hampered by its lack of a digitizer and 4:3 aspect ratio, it could catch on with folks eager for a 7-inch tablet alternative.

Catchy title, right. Well, it actually describes exactly what President Obama and hopeful Mitt Romney are doing in this new video game by Chair Entertainment, powered by the Epic Unreal Engine (yes, that's the Infinity Blade engine). The free app is called “VOTE!!!” and it has been designed at the right time. Now that the gloves are off on the political stage, voters of both party can actually take action instead of hearing a bunch of non-information on both sides.
Behind the game, this is a way to attract the attention of young voters to the upcoming elections.

PayPal expands presence in US retail stores with new Discover partnership

PayPal already has a partnership with MasterCard in place that lets you use its debit cards in stores, but the company has now expanded that retail presence even further with a new deal it's struck with Discover. Starting sometime next year, that arrangement will let PayPal customers use their charge cards at any of the 7 million retail locations that accept Discover cards, with funds drawn directly from their PayPal account. What's more, PayPal says that retailers won't have to make any hardware or software upgrades to accept the PayPal payments, noting that they'll simply have to let customers know of the new option with in-store signage.
