Google image search results crammed into picture dictionary

Though not quite a replacement for Mountain View's ill-fated dictionary, this 1,240 page tome contains the first Google image search result for each word in a run-of-the-mill dictionary. With a PHP script, London-based artists Felix Heyes and Ben West scraped the image from each search and compiled an alphabetically ordered PDF brimming with 21,000 images - safesearch-disabled warts and all. "It's really an unfiltered, uncritical record of the state of human culture in 2012," West told Creative Applications Network.

Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3

ASUS's seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC's gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. The hardware specs end there, but thanks to some investigation by Android Police and Rightware, it appears that this mystery tablet is running Android 4.1 — possibly the version number for Android's next iteration, Jelly Bean.

Sony Xperia neo L escapes China borders, to launch globally soon

Sony Xperia neo L was announced back in March but back then it was expected to be a Chinese market exclusive. Well, not anymore. The Xperia neo L popped up on the SonyÂ's global website, which means it should be out worldwide soon. No pricing and availability are revealed just yet, though.

In case you need a refresh, the neo L is SonyÂ's first smartphone to run ICS out of the box. It packs a 4-inch IPS LCD FWVGA display, a 5MP snapper with 720p video recording and is based on the same Snapdragon chipset as the previous neo phones.

Dell announces Inspiron One 23 and One 20 all-in-ones

In addition to the XPS One 27, Dell just unveiled a pair of Inspiron all-in-ones that will launch in the US in the coming weeks. First up, there's the One 23, the larger version of the two with more robust internals, and then there's the One 20, which has a 20-inch display and a more budget-friendly price. Starting at $749, the Inspiron One 23 is available with either second- or third-generation Intel CPUs, ranging from a 3.3GHz Core i3-2120 processor at the entry level to a Core i7-3770s in top-of-the-line models. It comes standard with 500GB of storage, though that can be upped to 2TB.

Movies encoded into gas, are gas chambers the new cinemas?

So we listen to music from an MP3 file or a CD most of the time, and watch movies on Blu-ray, DVD or head to the cinemas. How about changing the way we do the latter, through inhaling some gas. No, I am not talking about doing anything illegal here, but it seems that scientists have managed to come up with a way to stash away video in a totally new format – gas. This is the first time in history where images are stashed in a non-solid format, and can be played back afterwards.

ICANN anticipated that we'd see the first fruits of its open season on top-level domains (TLDs) roughly a year after the hunt began; sure enough, it's winding down applications tonight. If you have the $185,000 plus $25,000 per year to make a domain your own, you've got until midnight GMT (7PM ET) to get that custom spin on the web. Don't think that you'll get the rubber stamp right away, though. ICANN plans to detail the requests on June 13th and consider any objections over similarity or multiple bids for the same name.

Ford is giving the public at large a chance to jump behind the wheel of its upcoming 2013 Focus ST. The company is hosting a slew of consumer driving events around the country where consumers will be able to take the wheel for a little driving training and timed laps on an autocross course. The tour starts on June 30 in New York before moving on to Washington, D.C., Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Each event starts at 9am. and features a full day of getting cozy with the new sport hatch.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to Canada on June 20

The Samsung Galaxy S III will soon make its North American debut as Canadian carrier Videotron has confirmed a once rumored June 20th release date. The revelation of a release date follows the debut of a countdown on Bell's site that may be ticking off the seconds until the carrier is accepting pre-orders. There is a chance that a US launch could sneak in an steal Canada's thunder, but for the moment this seems unlikely considering the date is only three weeks away.

Batman Nokia Lumia 900 priced at £600, throws in some free movie tickets

We said it was coming soon, and the Dark Knight-themed WinPho hasn't disappointed. Phones 4u has just announced that pre-ordered laser-etched Lumia 900s will be delivered on June 1st; that's this Friday. Off-contract pricing is pegged at £600, although multiple contracts are also available from the UK retailer. There doesn't appear to be any extra functionality on the special edition, although bragging rights do count for a lot. The phone will arrive in limited numbers, but neither Nokia nor Phones 4u is spilling the beans on precise unit numbers.

Prototype glasses help the visually impaired avoid obstacles

The crafty engineers at Google aren't the only ones working on augmented reality glasses. Researchers at the Instituto de Oftalmología Aplicada have created a prototype system, based around a head-mounted display and a pair of small cameras. Instead of overlaying info about landmarks or capturing video of your trampoline-based escapades, this prototype is simply meant to help the visually impaired detect and avoid obstacles. A small computer performs real-time analysis of the environment highlighting objects and color coding them to indicate distance.

Rumor: production for new iPhone to start at the end of Q2, or in Q3

Today's rumor about the upcoming iPhone claims that production for Apple's new smartphone will only start in late Q2 or in Q3. Unfortunately that time frame is vague enough so that it doesn't actually give us any solid indication of when the new iPhone will be released. Though with production only starting at the end of June at the earliest, a reveal next month at Apple's annual WWDC seems very unlikely. Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard something like that.

Intel funnels $40 million into global network of research laboratories

Like any tech company worth its weight in silicon, Intel puts plenty of cash into research, often partnering with outside labs and schools that are less concerned with turning every project into a multi-billion dollar product. The rumors turned out to be true after all. First, the bad news: most versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III have been confirmed to be delayed, at least in the UK.
