Robokind from Hanson Robotics paraded

Hanson Robotics must be pretty proud to have paraded their very first production unit that hails from their miniature humanoid robot range, calling it the Robokind. Sporting a rather semi-realistic head that comes complete with moving eyelids and lips, it is very different from the rest of the robots which form part of the commercially-available research platforms. In fact, prototypes of this particular robot are already being prepared for action under the segment of autism treatment therapy. Of course, such robots are definitely not going to come cheap – as the cheapest Robokind model will start from $11,500 onwards.

New Digg launched

Digg – the website that made plenty of waves many years ago, but then suffered a huge decline (to the ignomity of being sold for just $500,000), is back just like Arnold. Betaworks acquired Digg around one and a half months ago, where this revamped Digg website and iPhone app have rolled out – a day ahead of schedule, to boot. Current Digg CEO John Borthwick did mention to the BBC that the old Digg was way too expensive to run, and this streamlined version that sports a totally new code base and fresh infrastructure is a whole lot more affordable.

Verizon to stop blocking tethering apps, pay $1.25 million fine to FCC

. The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday announced that Verizon Wireless (VZ) will no longer be blocking tethering apps from mobile app stores. The nation's largest carrier was being investigated for violating the FCC's “C Block rules,” which allow customers to freely use the devices and applications of their choosing. “Today's action demonstrates that compliance with FCC obligations is not optional. The open device and application obligations were core conditions when Verizon purchased the C-block spectrum,” said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

In what seems to be an unintentional response to our previous report surrounding the supposed rampant piracy on Android, another developer believes that the reverse is true. Chris Pruett, a developer for the popular game Wind-up Knight and founder of Robot Invader, said that the company's piracy rate on the said game was about 12% on Android and about 15% on iOS. Pruett added that back when Wind-up Knight for iOS was a paid app, the piracy rate reportedly went 80%. The developer also mentioned that roughly 100% of their pirate users on Android and iOS are in China. “I think piracy is, as always, a red herring.

The spy shots frankly don't tell us much more than that, since the mule is wrapped in an ill-fitting Quattroporte body giving away little more than a shorter wheelbase and smaller brakes. Owners and stakeholders of Big Media have thick skins. So the persistent trending of #NBCFail, and the riotous reading that the tweet stream provides, is probably bouncing right off their leathery hides. For one thing, the complaints were surely foreseen. They are largely the same criticisms NBC withstood in previous Olympics - over-curating, ill-placed commercials, tape delays, scandalously inane commentary, and a generally inferior Olympics presentation compared to other countries. The unspoken shrugging answer, of course, is financial.

For gamers looking forward to Skyrim: Dawnguard coming onto the PS3 and the PC, you guys might be aware that the DLC for PC and the PS3 might not be looking so great at the moment.  Supposedly the DLC was expected to make its way onto the PS3 and the PC after the Xbox 360 enjoyed its 30 day exclusivity, but safe to say they have missed their mark. Google just kicked its Google Fiber efforts into overdrive. The company's Kansas City effort is getting a full launch and now includes Google Fiber TV - a "real" TV service with recognizable channels and its own, fully searchable interface that mixes DVR results with Netflix and YouTube. As many as 500 shows can be stored in full 1080p HD, and several TVs within the home can tune in at the same time. Not surprisingly, there's also a major mobile component taking advantage of that 1Gbps fiber link, as users will have the option of browsing, sharing and eventually watching live TV directly from tablet apps.

Arduino Leonardo finally launches with new pin layout and lower price

We caught our first glimpse at the new, simplified Arduino Leonardo at Maker Faire back in September of last year. At the time, we were promised a late October shipping date, but it failed to materialize. Finally, Massimo Banzi has taken the wraps off the slimmed down microcontroller and its now in stock at retailers across the web. The Leonardo sports a new pin layout, dubbed R3 (which the Uno has also been updated with), that will become standard across all Arduino boards. That's a big deal for shield makers who only have to design and manufacture an add-on once to ensure that it's compatible with the entire product line.
