HTC Amaze 4G caught in the wild

HTC Amaze 4G caught in the wild

The HTC Amaze 4G was only announced a few days ago and slated for an October 12th release date, but it looks like the phone has already started arriving in stores. The folks over at TmoNews recently got their hands on some photographs showing the phone in its full glory, together with its retail packaging. No videos of the phone in action yet, but I'm pretty sure those will surface soon enough. The HTC Amaze 4G is one beast of a phone, packing a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 4.3″ qHD display, NFC, Android 2.3.4, HSPA+ 42 connectivity, 8-megapixel camera and more.

Canadian Retailer Leaks Kobo Vox E-Reader

Kobo is attempting to steal the thunder from Amazon and Barnes & Noble when it comes to 7-inch LCD e-reader domination. News about the Kobo Vox has been around since it was filed in the FCC weeks ago, but details about the device has only been sprouting out just now. The Kobo Vox was accidentally(?) leaked on Canadian retailer website Future Shop, where its specs were revealed. The listing has since been removed, but you gotta applaud the quick eyes and copy-paste powers of the netizens. The device features a 7-inch LCD with 1,024 x 600 resolution, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, and an expected battery life of up to six hours.

The patent war between Apple and Samsung seems to be ongoing with no end in sight, or so it seemed until Samsung decided to step forward and offer Apple a deal which would allow them to sell their Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia in time for the holidays. For those unfamiliar with the situation, Apple has successfully managed to get injunctions against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia and Germany, so while the fate of the tablet in Germany has yet to be revealed, as far as Australia is concerned, Samsung is attempting to strike a deal with Apple, although the details of the deal were discussed fully in court.

Beautiful Retro Airia Desk Is Totally Modern

Beautiful Retro Airia Desk Is Totally Modern

More comfortable and way more elegant than a laptop on an ironing board. I use an old cast-iron sewing machine table with a marble slab thrown on top for my desk. It's just like the ones you'll find in cool little restaurants and bars, only with a giant Mac sat on top. If I was in the market (and had the money for) a proper desk, I'd be buying the Airia Desk, from Herman Miller.

Designed by Kaiju Studios, the 1960s styling hides some neat modern-day features. At the front edge is a drawer which contains removable cork-lined trays, and the rear shelf section has three removable hatches with holes, through which cables can be threaded.

While we have our e-readers and e-books, it looks like author Terry Deary has taken that to the next level, by writing a book entirely on his mobile phone, which is his attempt at getting the youth generation to start reading more books. The current generation seems to be largely focused on their computers, smartphones, tablets, portable gaming consoles and whatnot, so in order to appeal the idea of reading to them, Terry Deary has written a new book entitled "The Perfect Poison Pills", which is a dark comedy aimed at young adults.

Samsung offers Apple a deal to allow Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales in Australia

Could Apple and Samsung's Australian patent battle be nearing an end. We're not sure yet, but things are looking slightly rosier, now that Sammy has approached its rival with a proposed compromise. As the Wall Street Journal reports, Samsung offered Apple a deal today that would allow its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to hit the Australian market as early as next week. Justice Annabelle Bennett pointed out that the agreement wouldn't allow Samsung to receive a final ruling on the dispute, but attorney David Catterns explained that it would at least allow the manufacturer to sell its slate ahead of this year's holiday shopping rush.

A push-start button that can tell if you're drunk?

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that two companies have joined forces to create a push-to-start button that can automatically sense the driver's blood-alcohol level. Takata, an Auburn Hills-based parts supplier and TruTouch, an Albuquerque-based firm, have received a $2.25 million grant from the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety to help make the creation commercially viable. Currently, the device is about the size of a bread box and uses an infrared sensor to determine the amount of alcohol in a person's system.

Multi-function devices seem to have gained some traction in terms of interest among consumers. No matter what type of device it may be, it may hold a certain level of appeal as long as it offers multiple functions that other devices in its class may not be able to provide. One example of such a device is the new Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer from Griffin Technology. Not surprisingly, Page made the leap right to autonomous cars. "The automated car stuff is a good example of this possibility," Page told the assembled masses. "It seemed pretty practical.

PhoneArena has heard it from someone they believe is reliable that Best Buy will be offering the HTC Flyer to consumers starting October 6th for just $300. The 6th is not a Sunday (where Best Buy usually posts temporary price cuts) and PhoneArena didn't mention anything about it being anything other than temporary. Yesterday's big announcement by Amazon for the Kindle Fire likely drove this change, they believe, as their new Android tablet (which is hardly Android at the surface, from what we can tell) will come in at just $200. Simply the joys of good competition.

Apple wants to get rid of motherboard cables

There have been some rather wacky ideas such as cutting the audio plug in half, but there have been rather ingenious thoughts that prove how serious Apple is about its product design as well. Most of these approaches relate to ideas that apparently have been sparked by the need of a more compact design, even if a specialized manufacturer does not offer it. A new patent application that describes a multi-pane circuit board may be one such example. To save space, Apple seems to be thinking about replacing traditional cables that connect circuit boards with flexible circuit boards.

Google+ users hit 50 million mark

In just less than a week after Google opened up the doors of their own social network, Google+, to the world, it seems that the growth has proved to be phenomenal. According to Paul Allen (unofficial statistician for Google+), Google+ has already achieved the 50 million user mark. Sure, it might pale in comparison to Facebook's figure that stands more than 15 times the number, but see how fast it took for Google+ to arrive there compared to Facebook – Google+ took just 88 days, while Facebook plodded along for 1,325 days.

After eluding our grubby little paws at its launch in New York and again this morning at Mobilize 2011, we're happy to report that we've finally caught up with T-Mobile's Galaxy S II. To recap, the carrier's permutation rocks the same WVGA 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display as Sprint's Epic 4G Touch, but replaces Samsung's in-house 1.2GHz Exynos CPU with Qualcomm's dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 processor. T-Mobile tells us the brain swap was necessary as it wanted its variant to support 42Mbps HSPA+ on the network's AWS band (just like its cousin the Amaze 4G).
