There are a number of really nice devices that run on the Windows Phone platform. However, after three years since it was first released, Microsoft's mobile platform hasn't exactly taken the smartphone market by storm. Even the revamped Windows Phone 8 wasn't able to perform significantly better than its predecessors. Rumor has it that Microsoft has created a working group for Windows Phone 9, which is going to be a major platform update that the company is going to build essentially from square one.
This working group has reportedly been tasked with redesigning the Metro UI, which can presumably be replaced as well for something else.
