Prototype Vending Machine Uses Facial Recognition for Targeted Ads

In a country where vending machines are found almost everywhere, two Japan-based companies (together with Intel) have developed a sort of “vending machine of the future.” Sanden and Okaya introduce a concept vending machine model that features a vertical 65-inch full-HD transparent display and runs on Intel SandyBridge Core. While idle, the display shows a digital clock and animations of animals, pictures, and texts to attract people. When a customer stands in front of the machine, its anonymous facial recognition system determines the person's gender and approximate age to provide targetted advertisement and news.
